The Origin of Lucille – Negan’s Leading Lady
Assuming that you watched the finale of season 6 of The Walking Dead, you will have been formally introduced to Negan’s leading lady, Lucille. Lucille, a baseball bat wrapped elegantly in barbed wire, never strays too far away from Negan’s side and is always there to intimidate and bash some heads together. But – how did Lucille come to be? Thanks to issue #4 of Here’s Negan – we can now sleep soundly at night knowing how she received her name. Spoilers lie ahead.
The Here’s Negan issues are a complete backstory to the now well-feared character who hit out screens this past spring. In the backstory, we find out Negan’s origin story of how he was a high school gym teacher who just wanted to be cool and down with the kids. Being a harsh taskmaster and using the kind of language he’s now infamous for on the teens, he insulted and mocked his way through the school day.
We find out Negan, was in fact, a married man once. Although he had some adultery issues, those soon changed once they received his wife’s cancer diagnosis which made him turn all of his attention and affection onto her. In her last days, the hospitals were evacuating and the virus outbreak was well underway but Negan loyally stuck by her bedside, refusing to listen to the nurse’s warnings and offers of hospital transport.
After she took her last breaths and quickly reanimated as a walker Negan calls to his wife, “Lucille?” as she groans and mumbles. In a nutshell, Negan named his barbaric torture weapon after his late wife. To see what happens next, pick up next month’s issue of Here’s Negan.
