Real Horror – The Amityville Horror
The Amityville Horror follows a family that moves into a house where a murder was committed, it is here that they experience strange and terrifying occurrences. The movie and the book of the same name are based on real life events.
In 1975, the Lutz family moved into 112 Ocean Avenue where Ronald DeFeo Jr. had brutally murdered his family 13 months before they arrived. Ronald was tried and convicted of killing his father, mother, two brothers, and two sisters in cold blood. After denying murdering his family, he soon confessed saying “Once I started, I just couldn’t stop. It went so fast.”
Much of the DeFeo family’s furniture was still in the house when the Lutz’s moved in due to these being included as part of the deal. While the Lutz family settled in their new home, they claimed that they saw green slime on the walls and red-eyed pigs staring into their kitchen and living room. Other events include Kathy being embraced in a loving manner by an unseen force, cold spots and odours of perfume and excrement, their daughter developing an imaginary friend named “Jodie”, and crucifix’s turning upside down.
In January in 1976 the Lutz family moved out of the small town of Amityville, New York, leaving all of their possessions behind.
Much criticism and controversy have surrounded the Lutz family regarding the truthfulness of the events which they said occurred whilst living inside the house. George Lutz maintained that events in the book were “mostly true” and denied any suggestion of dishonesty on his part.
