Dead Shift by John Llewellyn Probert review
Terror Realm were lucky enough to read a pre-release copy of Dead Shift by John Llewellyn Probert, an author from south-west England.
Dead Shift is written in the great tradition of H.P. Lovecraft. Like Lovecraft’s work it is heavily descriptive and at times, this makes the book seem a little old-fashioned, anachronistic perhaps. In spite of this, it is a good story.
Arthur Lipscomb, an old man whose body is failing him, performs a ritual that is too much for his weak flesh. When he awakes in hospital, revitalised from a blood transfusion, he tries again and it is there that he opens a gateway that brings hell to earth.
Three of the hospital staff work together to try and save the hospital, the city and perhaps the world from the primordial evil that has been unleashed and is attempting to rewrite the genetic coding of every living, dead and other matter.
The doctors must overcome crippling fear and terrifying monsters and they only have the vaguest idea of how they can put things right again. I do not wish to spoil the story, but I can say it ends in a very satisfying way. The suspense is maintained throughout and the reader constantly fears for the safety and sanity of the heroes.
There are some small problems with editing, but not enough to detract from the story. Shorter than a standard novella but an enjoyable read. Dead Shift is published by Horrific Tales Publishing and is released on March 19, available in Kindle, Case Laminate Hardback and Audio Book formats.
From Horrific Tales Publishing – “They thought the old man was harmless. Just another tramp found collapsed in an abandoned housing estate. At Northcote Hospital they put him in a bed and let him keep the strange old book he insisted on clutching.
Three friends working through the night at Northcote Hospital are about to experience the worst shift of their lives, trapped inside the building as creatures undreamed of in their worst nightmares begin to crawl from the walls in a bid to make the place their own.
Soon everyone and everything in Northcote Hospital will be changed. Will anyone be able to stop the evil worming its way through the building? Or will the horror escape to infect the planet?”
